Elevating Campus Recreation at the University of Wisconsin–Madison
The University of Wisconsin–Madison is taking a major step forward in enhancing its campus recreation infrastructure with a comprehensive upgrade to the Bruce Family Recreation Fields. TenCate is proud to support this investment, bringing advanced synthetic turf technology to one of the university’s most active and visible student spaces.
Beginning this summer, the project will include the installation of more than 280,000 square feet of Pivot® Performance Turf. Designed for constant, multiuse activity, the new surface will strengthen the university’s ability to serve intramural sports, club athletics, and recreational programming. Construction is scheduled for completion before the start of the 2026–2027 academic year, welcoming students back to a refreshed and high-performing environment.
A High-Use Space Built for Daily Demand
The Bruce Family Recreation Fields play a central role in campus life and support student wellness, connection, and engagement throughout the year. With frequent use for flag football, soccer, softball, baseball, and other activities, the fields must perform reliably day after day.
The upgraded surface will be fully lined for multiple sports and engineered to maintain consistent performance under heavy use. Durability and predictability were essential considerations, making Pivot® Performance Turf a strong fit for this high-traffic collegiate setting.
“We are excited to be working with TenCate to bring the Pivot Turf System to our campus here at the University of Wisconsin-Madison,” said Jeff Straw, Associate Director of Facility Services, UW‑Madison Recreation & Wellbeing. “We are looking forward to our students and members being able to experience the benefits of installing this type of turf system.”
Prioritizing Environmental Responsibility
Situated along the shores of Lake Mendota, the Bruce Fields project also reflects a strong focus on environmental stewardship. Pivot® Performance Turf utilizes an infill‑free, fiber-based design that eliminates traditional black crumb rubber and reduces the potential for microplastic movement into surrounding natural areas.
This approach offers a new path forward for campuses and municipalities located near sensitive ecosystems. It delivers the reliability and performance of synthetic turf while addressing longstanding environmental concerns.
Innovation That Looks Forward
Pivot represents the latest generation of synthetic turf innovation, developed with a focus on athlete experience, long-term durability, and sustainability. Backed by an industry-leading 12‑year warranty, the system is purpose-built for environments where continuous use is the norm rather than the exception.
“The selection of Pivot strongly aligns with Wisconsin’s state motto, ‘Forward,’ underscoring the university’s commitment to progress, innovation, and forward-thinking infrastructure investment,” said Jody Factor, President of TenCate Midwest. “We’re incredibly excited to partner with UW–Madison and to support the health and wellbeing of students through high-performing, durable, innovative spaces.”
Strengthening Active Campus Communities
As collegiate recreation programs continue to expand, institutions are seeking surface solutions that deliver reliability, longevity, and environmental responsibility without compromising user experience. Pivot® Performance Turf continues to be adopted nationwide for its consistent response, grasslike feel, and ability to support diverse activities without traditional performance infill.
For UW–Madison, the transformation of the Bruce Family Recreation Fields represents more than a facility upgrade. It is an investment in the daily experience of thousands of students who rely on these spaces to stay active, connected, and engaged today and for years to come.
